Sydney and the NSW Coast
Base · 4–9 days
The strongest first landing: harbour ferries, sandstone walks, proper city dining and beaches all work in one stay. Add the Blue Mountains by train or take a car south; do not spend the whole trip orbiting Circular Quay.
Melbourne and the Great Ocean Road
Base · 5 days
Come for neighbourhood restaurants, coffee, galleries and sport rather than landmark-chasing, then drive the coast for surf towns, rainforest and the Apostles. The Great Ocean Road needs two nights minimum; a rushed day trip is a bad use of it.
Tropical North Queensland
Base · 5 days
Cairns, Port Douglas, the Daintree and the Great Barrier Reef make Australia’s cleanest reef-and-rainforest pairing. Cairns is practical; Port Douglas is the better base if you want beach time and dinner without a backpacker-city feel.
Uluṟu and the Red Centre
A short, expensive, flight-dependent stop that earns its place through desert scale, Anangu Country and the walks at Kata Tjuṯa. Give it two or three nights, not a hurried overnight between airports.
Tasmania
Base · 10 days
Hobart, Bruny, Freycinet, Bay of Fires and Cradle Mountain combine produce, art and serious coastal and mountain scenery better than any other compact Australian road trip. It looks small on a map; its slow roads and changeable weather say otherwise.
Darwin and Kakadu
This is the Top End’s gateway to wetlands, rock art, crocodile country and Litchfield swimming holes. It is a dedicated tropical nature trip, not a casual add-on to an east-coast itinerary, and access in Kakadu can be seasonal.
Adelaide and South Australia Wine Country
Adelaide is the calm, food-led base for Barossa, McLaren Vale and the Adelaide Hills, with Kangaroo Island as a separate commitment rather than a day-trip afterthought. Choose it over Sydney or Melbourne if wine and produce matter more than big-city energy.
Perth and Margaret River
Base · 8 days
Perth brings Indian Ocean beaches, Fremantle and Rottnest; Margaret River adds excellent Cabernet, surf and caves a few hours south by car. It is far too isolated to tack onto a short east-coast trip, but excellent as its own west-coast break.
The Whitsundays
Airlie Beach, Hamilton Island and Whitehaven Beach are for sailing, reef days and a deliberate resort pause between bigger east-coast stops. Go if you want islands; skip it if packaged beach holidays are not your thing.
Ningaloo, Exmouth and the Kimberley
Western Australia at its wildest: shore-access reef at Ningaloo, seasonal whale-shark encounters, Broome sunsets and vast outback distances. This is a separate, costly expedition rather than an extension of Perth or the east coast.
Sydney properly, with the Blue Mountains and south coast
9 daysSydney and the NSW Coast (9 days)
For a first visit with no domestic-flight churn. Base in Sydney for harbour, beaches and neighbourhoods; use one day for the Blue Mountains, then rent a car for two nights on the south coast before returning to Sydney. It is far better than spending half the trip transferring to Melbourne just to say you did both.
Plan this routeClassic east-coast first visit: cities, road trip and reef
14 daysSydney and the NSW Coast (4 days) → Melbourne and the Great Ocean Road (5 days) → Tropical North Queensland (5 days)
The sensible icons route, paced to acknowledge that domestic flights consume most of a day door to door. Fly Sydney–Melbourne, give the Great Ocean Road two nights within the Melbourne block, then fly north for an outer-reef day and rainforest time around Cairns or Port Douglas. Five nights in Tropical North Queensland leaves room for weather rather than gambling the reef on one departure.
Plan this routeTasmania road trip, not a rushed island tick-box
10 daysTasmania (10 days)
For walkers, produce obsessives and travelers who would rather drive a real loop than collect airports. Start and finish around Hobart, with Bruny Island, Freycinet, Bay of Fires and Cradle Mountain between; allow for slow roads and weather. Tasmania deserves to stand alone rather than being wedged into a mainland itinerary.
Plan this routeWestern Australia: Perth beaches and a deliberate Margaret River escape
8 daysPerth and Margaret River (8 days)
A compact west-coast break for wine, surf and Indian Ocean beaches. Spend three to four nights across Perth, Fremantle and Rottnest, then take a car south for three nights in Margaret River. Do not attach this to a short east-coast trip: Perth is a serious domestic transfer from Sydney or Melbourne, not an overnight detour.
