Paro Valley
Base · 1–2 nights
Bhutan’s air gateway and the essential first or last stop: Tiger’s Nest is the headline, but Rinpung Dzong, Kyichu Lhakhang and the farm valley justify more than a transit night. It is the busiest valley, so use it for the big sights rather than expecting solitude.
Thimphu
Base · 2 nights
The capital is where Bhutan feels current rather than preserved behind glass—cafés, craft shops, markets and traffic alongside major monasteries and dzongs. Useful for orientation, less compelling as a scenic retreat.
Punakha and the lower Wangdue Valley
Base · 2 nights
Lower, warmer and softer than Paro or Thimphu, with Punakha Dzong at the river confluence as the payoff. Stay long enough for paddy walks, suspension bridges and an unhurried day; it is particularly strong in winter.
Gangtey / Phobjikha Valley
Base · 1–2 nights
A broad, high glacial valley where the point is quiet landscape and short walks, not a packed monument list. Come for Gangtey Monastery and, from roughly November to February, black-necked cranes; accept cold and limited nightlife.
Trongsa
Short stop · 1 night
A strategic central stop dominated by the enormous Trongsa Dzong and its royal history. It earns an overnight because breaking up the Gangtey-to-Bumthang road day is far wiser than treating it as a windshield sight.
Bumthang
Base · 3 nights
The four valleys of Jakar, Chumey, Tang and Ura are Bhutan’s cultural deep end: old temples, village walks, weaving, buckwheat cooking and dairy traditions. It needs real time and is not worth adding if you cannot absorb the long approach.
Haa Valley
A quieter western detour over Chele La from Paro, with farmhouses, potato fields and less polished rural life. Choose it over another dzong only if you have spare nights and value atmosphere over headline sights.
Eastern Bhutan
Base · 8 nights
The Mongar, Lhuentse, Trashigang and Trashiyangtse valleys are the textile-rich, far less visited east—more village Bhutan than hotel circuit Bhutan. This is a committed traverse with punishing road time, not a quick extension from Bumthang.
High Himalaya trekking country
The Druk Path, Jomolhari, Laya and Lunana are where Bhutan shifts from cultural road trip to high-altitude expedition. Pick a route matching your experience; Jomolhari and beyond are not casual add-ons to a week in the valleys.
Southern Bhutan
The Phuentsholing, Gelephu, Sarpang and Royal Manas approaches are subtropical, Indian-border Bhutan: useful for land entry, wildlife and Nepali-Indian food influences. Do not substitute it for the western valleys unless nature or the border route is the reason for the trip.
Essential western Bhutan loop
8 days / 7 nightsParo Valley (2 nights) → Thimphu (2 nights) → Punakha and the lower Wangdue Valley (2 nights) → Paro Valley (1 night)
The correct first trip for most people: enough time for Tiger’s Nest, the capital’s contemporary side and Punakha’s river-valley architecture without making every day a road day. Keep the final Paro night; do not gamble on a long transfer before an international flight.

10 days / 9 nightsParo Valley (2 nights) → Thimphu (2 nights) → Punakha and the lower Wangdue Valley (2 nights) → Gangtey / Phobjikha Valley (2 nights) → Paro Valley (1 night)
The best balanced first-timer route if you have the time. Gangtey earns its two nights because it is a real high-valley change of scene, not a Punakha day trip; it is especially strong in crane season, roughly November to February.

13 days / 12 nightsParo Valley (2 nights) → Thimphu (2 nights) → Punakha and the lower Wangdue Valley (2 nights) → Gangtey / Phobjikha Valley (1 night) → Trongsa (1 night) → Bumthang (3 nights) → Paro Valley (1 night)
For travelers who want Bhutan’s cultural depth rather than a highlights lap. The Trongsa overnight is non-negotiable pacing: it prevents the Gangtey-to-Bumthang stretch becoming a punishing windshield day. Bumthang gets the time for temples, villages, weaving and food that the western circuit cannot deliver.

20 days / 19 nightsParo Valley (2 nights) → Thimphu (2 nights) → Punakha and the lower Wangdue Valley (2 nights) → Gangtey / Phobjikha Valley (1 night) → Trongsa (1 night) → Bumthang (3 nights) → Eastern Bhutan (8 nights)
A serious traverse for textile-focused travelers and repeat visitors, not an extension to bolt onto a standard itinerary. Give the east proper time for Mongar, Lhuentse, Trashigang and Trashiyangtse, then plan a one-way exit via eastern flight or the Samdrup Jongkhar border; weather can disrupt the flight option, so it cannot be your only contingency.
