1Zagreb
Base · 2 days
Croatia’s compact Central European counterweight to the coast: markets, museums, parks and a serious café habit. Give it two nights at the start or end of a longer trip; it adds context, but it is not a substitute for the Adriatic.

2Istria
Base · 3–5 days
Croatia’s best food-and-driving region, combining Rovinj and Pula with hill towns such as Motovun and Grožnjan. Come for olive oil, Malvazija, Teran, truffles and Roman remnants; rent a car and do not treat it as a generic beach stop.

3Kvarner
Base · 2 days
A useful northern-Adriatic mix of Opatija’s old resort grandeur, working-city Rijeka and accessible islands including Krk, Cres and Lošinj. It is the better choice for quieter island time and seafood without the Hvar circus.

4Plitvice Lakes and Lika
Short stop · 1 day
The essential inland nature stop: spectacular turquoise lakes, waterfalls and boardwalks in a forested highland landscape. Stay nearby for a night rather than forcing it into a rushed coast-to-coast day trip; expect regulated routes and crowds in summer.

5Zadar
Base · 2 days
A compact, manageable coastal city with enough history to fill a day and a strong position for Dugi Otok, Kornati, Paklenica and northern islands. It is less grand than Split or Dubrovnik, but substantially less frantic.

6Šibenik
Base · 2 days
A steep, stone-built Dalmatian city with the excellent St James Cathedral, serious fortifications and easy access to Krka. Choose it over Split if you want a calmer base with real atmosphere rather than maximum ferry connections.

7Split
Base · 2 days
The country’s most practical coastal hub: Diocletian’s Palace is a lived-in maze, not a sealed monument, and ferries make Brač, Hvar and Vis workable without a car. Stay two nights, then get onto an island rather than lingering in the congested center.

8Dubrovnik
Base · 2 days
Croatia’s unavoidable showstopper, with city walls and a genuinely extraordinary old town, but it demands tactical timing. Walk the walls early, sleep outside the core if you value quiet, and use Cavtat, Lokrum or Pelješac to escape the cruise-ship churn.

9Slavonia and the Danube
Eastern Croatia’s flat, wine-rich, paprika-led alternative to the coast: Osijek, Baranja cellars, Kopački Rit wetlands and Ilok’s Danube vineyards. Make it a dedicated segment, not a token overnight squeezed into a Dubrovnik itinerary.

Classic first visit: Split, islands and Dubrovnik
9 daysSplit (2 days) → Hvar (3 days) → Korčula (2 days) → Dubrovnik (2 days)
The cleanest first Croatian coast trip: fly into Split and out of Dubrovnik. Split gives you the Roman core and ferry hub; Hvar supplies boats, swimming and energy; Korčula breaks the southbound journey instead of turning it into a punishing transfer; Dubrovnik gets two nights because one is merely a glimpse. This is ferries and buses, not a rail route—do not add a return to Split just to save a little on flights.
Plan this routeThe varied first trip: Zagreb to Dubrovnik
11 daysZagreb (2 days) → Plitvice Lakes and Lika (1 day) → Šibenik (2 days) → Split (2 days) → Hvar (2 days) → Dubrovnik (2 days)
This is the route for travelers who want Croatia’s actual contrasts rather than an uninterrupted beach holiday: café-city Zagreb, inland karst and waterfalls, a calmer stone Dalmatian base, then Split, an island and Dubrovnik. Use a car from Zagreb through Plitvice and Šibenik, return it in Split, then go car-free. Treat Zagreb–coast and Split–Dubrovnik as substantial transfer days, not incidental hops.
Plan this routeFood, wine and quieter islands: northwest Croatia
9 daysZagreb (2 days) → Istria (5 days) → Kvarner (2 days)
The superior choice for people who care more about meals, wine, Roman sites and driving scenery than ticking off Dubrovnik. Base Istria around Rovinj or Pula, then spend time inland around Motovun, Livade and Grožnjan; five nights is justified because the interior is the point. Finish in Kvarner for Opatija or a quieter island such as Cres or Lošinj. Keep the rental car throughout—without one, this route loses much of its value.

15 daysZagreb (2 days) → Plitvice Lakes and Lika (1 day) → Istria (3 days) → Zadar (2 days) → Split (2 days) → Vis (3 days) → Dubrovnik (2 days)
This is the minimum comfortable version of a country-scale Croatia trip: continental capital, inland lakes, Italianate Istria, quieter northern Dalmatia, Split’s transport hub, then a properly slow island before Dubrovnik. It works only as an open jaw and only if you accept that Istria-to-Dalmatia is a real repositioning day. Use a car through Istria and Zadar, return it in Split, and do not try to carry it onto Vis unless it is central to the trip.
