Athens
Base · 1–5 nights
The essential base for the Acropolis, major museums, markets, serious dining and nightlife. Give it at least four nights; Plaka alone is not Athens.
Aegina and Agistri
Base · 2 nights
The easiest Saronic island escape from Piraeus: Aegina has a working harbor, the Temple of Aphaia and pistachio groves, while tiny Agistri is for pine shade and uncomplicated swimming.
Hydra
Base · 2–3 nights
A car-free stone harbor with mansion museums, coastal walks and swim coves reached by foot or water taxi. It is expensive and steep, but worth two nights rather than a rushed day trip.
Athens Riviera
Base · 2 nights
The south-coast strip from Faliro through Glyfada and Vouliagmeni to Varkiza is the practical answer when you want a swim without committing to a ferry. Use it for a city-and-sea break, not for island atmosphere.
Cape Sounion and Lavrio
Come for the Temple of Poseidon at sunset, a swim in the coves around Legrena, and a seafood meal in old mining-port Lavrio. It is a proper half- or full-day excursion from Athens, best handled by car or tour.
Poros and the Troizen-Methana Peninsula
Base · 3 nights
Poros offers a green, lived-in island town, easy swimming and a slower pace than Hydra; the adjacent Troizen-Methana area adds citrus country, volcanic scenery and ancient sites. Plan wheels if you want to explore beyond the harbor.
Piraeus
More than a ferry terminal: stay near Zea or Mikrolimano for seafood, marina walks and maritime museums before an early island departure. Central Athens remains the better main cultural base.
East Attica
Vravrona’s Sanctuary of Artemis, Marathon, Porto Rafti seafood, Spata wineries and Rafina’s port make this a useful, low-rise counterweight to Athens. It is scattered and car-dependent, so it rewards planning rather than spontaneity.
Elefsina and Western Attica
The Sanctuary of Demeter at Elefsina is one of ancient Greece's weightiest sites, set against industrial edges rather than postcard scenery. Pair it with quieter beaches around Kinetta, Psatha or Porto Germeno if you have a car.
Spetses
A piney, polished maritime island with grand captains' houses, the Old Harbor, cycling loops and boutique stays. Choose it over Hydra when you want more space and a refined Greek-weekend feel.
Kythira
Base · 5 nights
Attica's far-flung outlier feels closer to an Ionian-Cretan crossroads than to the Saronic islands, with Chora, Venetian remnants, Mylopotamos and serious beach-and-hiking range. Treat it as a separate car-based trip of at least four nights.
Athens with one intelligent escape
5 daysAthens (5 days)
The right first Attica trip when time is short. Use Athens as a proper base for the Acropolis, museums and neighborhoods, then take one day trip to Aegina and Agistri or Cape Sounion and Lavrio—never both.
Plan this routeFirst Attica, car-free
8 daysAthens (4 nights) → Aegina and Agistri (2 nights) → Hydra (2 nights)
A clean first island combination without renting a car: Athens for the essentials, Aegina for an easy working-island stay, then Hydra for its car-free harbor and coastal walks. Treat the Aegina-to-Hydra move as a transfer day and book around actual ferry schedules.
Plan this routeCity, coast and slow island
10 daysAthens (4 nights) → Athens Riviera (2 nights) → Poros and the Troizen-Methana Peninsula (3 nights) → Athens (1 night)
For travelers who want Athens, swimming and one lived-in island without changing hotels every night. Rent a car for the Riviera stretch to reach Cape Sounion and nearby coves, then slow down on Poros before returning to Athens ahead of a flight.
Plan this routeThe deeper cut: Saronic island plus Kythira
14 daysAthens (4 nights) → Hydra (3 nights) → Athens (1 night) → Kythira (5 nights) → Athens (1 night)
This works because it does not pretend Kythira is a quick island add-on. Start with Athens and Hydra, reset in Athens, then fly to Kythira and rent a car for Chora, Mylopotamos, villages and coves. Keep the final Athens night as a buffer before an international departure.
