Akshardham and Pandav Nagar
Short stop · 1 day
East Delhi’s essential stop: the vast modern Akshardham complex delivers carved-stone architecture, formal gardens, Hindu-themed exhibitions and an evening water show. Treat it as a tightly managed half- to full-day visit, not an ancient ruin.
Mayur Vihar Phase I and Patparganj
Base · 1–2 days
The most workable East Delhi base, with better residential calm than the main commercial corridors and easy access to Akshardham, Sanjay Lake and the Metro. Come for practical hotels, neighbourhood meals and logistics rather than landmarks.
Trilokpuri and Sanjay Lake
Base · 0.5–2 days
Sanjay Lake is East Delhi’s best break from traffic: go early for a walk, joggers, birdlife and some breathing room before the heat builds. The surrounding Trilokpuri area is dense and local, so this is a morning stop rather than a day out.
Laxmi Nagar and Preet Vihar
Base · 1–2 days
A crowded Vikas Marg commercial strip of coaching centres, offices, shops and inexpensive food. It is worth doing if you want everyday contemporary Delhi and serious snack grazing, not if you want a scenic wander.
Krishna Nagar and Lal Quarter
Base · 0.5–3 days
A useful local-shopping district for clothes, footwear, sweets and snack stops, with more ordinary retail energy than polished market theatre. It is less overwhelming than Gandhi Nagar and works well for an afternoon of grazing and browsing.
Gandhi Nagar Garment Market
Base · 1–3 days
A vast wholesale ready-made clothing district best tackled on a weekday morning with a specific buying list. Go for the mechanics of Delhi’s garment trade or serious sourcing; casual souvenir shoppers will likely find it exhausting.
Anand Vihar
East Delhi’s main rail, bus and Metro interchange, useful for an early departure, arrival or convention-related stay. It is a logistics choice, not a leisure neighbourhood.
Karkardooma, Vivek Vihar and Yamuna Sports Complex
A business-residential stretch whose real draw is the full-service convention hotel cluster around Yamuna Sports Complex, especially for travelers who prioritize comfort over neighborhood character. Stay here for an event or reliable upscale accommodation, then travel elsewhere for sights.
Geeta Colony and the Yamuna-side Neighbourhoods
Short stop · 0.5 days
Older east-bank residential-commercial Delhi with a more lived-in feel than the hotel-oriented parts of Mayur Vihar. Pair it with Gandhi Nagar or Krishna Nagar for local food and street-level city texture, not a checklist attraction.
Essential East Delhi
1 full dayAkshardham and Pandav Nagar (most of 1 day) → Trilokpuri and Sanjay Lake (late afternoon)
The one worthwhile first-timer circuit: commit the morning and early afternoon to Akshardham, then decompress at Sanjay Lake before sunset. Skip shopping districts; trying to add Gandhi Nagar would make the day miserable.
Plan this routeFirst proper visit: monument, food and local shopping
2 daysAkshardham and Pandav Nagar (1 day) → Mayur Vihar Phase I and Patparganj (evening on day 1) → Laxmi Nagar and Preet Vihar (morning to mid-afternoon on day 2) → Krishna Nagar and Lal Quarter (late afternoon and evening on day 2)
Best for a first visit with two full days. Day one is the major sight and an easy dinner near Mayur Vihar; day two trades heritage for snack food, contemporary Delhi commerce and practical local shopping.
Plan this routeEast Delhi deeper cut: park, markets and garment trade
3 daysAkshardham and Pandav Nagar (1 day) → Mayur Vihar Phase I and Patparganj (evening on day 1) → Trilokpuri and Sanjay Lake (morning on day 2) → Laxmi Nagar and Preet Vihar (afternoon and evening on day 2) → Gandhi Nagar Garment Market (morning to early afternoon on day 3) → Krishna Nagar and Lal Quarter (late afternoon and evening on day 3)
For travellers who actually enjoy urban texture rather than landmark collecting. The pacing is deliberate: Sanjay Lake is an early-morning stop, and Gandhi Nagar gets its own weekday morning while traders are active and your patience is intact.
Plan this routePurpose-led slow stay for buyers or family visits
4-5 daysMayur Vihar Phase I and Patparganj (arrival evening plus 1-2 relaxed meals) → Akshardham and Pandav Nagar (1 day) → Trilokpuri and Sanjay Lake (half day) → Laxmi Nagar and Preet Vihar (half to 1 day) → Gandhi Nagar Garment Market (1 weekday morning to afternoon) → Krishna Nagar and Lal Quarter (half day) → Geeta Colony and the Yamuna-side Neighbourhoods (half day)
Only make East Delhi a four- or five-day stay if you are sourcing garments, visiting family or happy to spend time eating, shopping and observing ordinary city life. It is intentionally slow, and it is not a replacement for a wider Delhi itinerary.
