Sipura is worth the effort for experienced surfers or travelers who want a genuinely remote Mentawai island base, provided you build in ferry buffers and pre-arrange accommodation and transfers. It is free to visit as an island, but transport, surf services and the foreign-surfer levy can be significant.
Book ferry after fixing accommodation
Reserve or hold Mentawai Fast directly by WhatsApp, phone or email as soon as your Padang overnight and Sipura stay are confirmed, then reconfirm the sailing the day before because schedules change with weather and operations.
MoreArrive in Padang the night before
Do not connect a same-day flight to the ferry: stay in Padang overnight and plan to reach Muaro Harbour very early for morning sailings.
MorePay the surf levy if surfing
Foreign surfers using Mentawai breaks must budget Rp2,000,000 for the reported 15-day Mentawai surfing levy and should confirm the current digital payment process in writing with their surf camp, charter or regency tourism office.
MoreAllow weather-buffer nights
Plan at least 3–4 nights for a non-surf stay or 7–10 nights for surfing, since sea conditions, ferry changes, tides and boat transfers can disrupt a tight itinerary.
MoreTuapejat Harbour
Principal public-ferry arrival point; no island admission or formal attraction entry.
Jati Beach
Government listing records daily operation 08:00–22:00; no verified entrance fee is published.
Mapaddegat Beach
Open beach/tourism-village area with local facilities; no verified entry fee is published.
Sipura (also spelled Sipora) is a roughly 621-sq-km inhabited island in Indonesia’s Mentawai Islands, in the Indian Ocean west of Sumatra. It is one of the four main Mentawai islands and the regency’s practical administrative hub: Tuapejat, on the north coast, is the capital of Mentawai Islands Regency and the main ferry arrival point. This is not a single managed park or resort but a working island of villages, roads, forest, beaches, ports and reef breaks, in an earthquake-prone outer-arc island chain shaped by tectonic subduction. Visitors come chiefly for remote beaches, surf camps and access to renowned reef waves around north Sipura and the south near Katiet.
Sipura is worthwhile for committed surfers, travelers who want a remote island base reachable from Padang, and visitors happy with low-key beaches, village life and slow logistics rather than conventional sightseeing. Tuapejat and nearby Mapaddegat make the north a practical base, while the island’s serious reef waves draw experienced surfers. Skip it if you need dependable daily transport, polished infrastructure, accessible facilities, calm guaranteed swimming, or beginner-friendly surf; ferries and roads can be unreliable, and many breaks are shallow, current-affected reefs.
Before you go
No. Sipura is an inhabited island, not a gated attraction, so there is no island admission ticket, timed-entry system or general visitor fee. It is free to visit. You pay separately for transport, accommodation, local boats, and any locally imposed parking or beach-service charges.
Foreign visitors surfing Mentawai breaks are subject to the Mentawai surfing levy: Rp2,000,000 for 15 days. This is a surfing levy, not a fee for visiting the island, sightseeing, swimming or staying in Tuapejat. Collection moved to a digital system in 2026, so ask your surf camp, charter or the regency tourism office to confirm the current payment method in writing before travel: https://www.fajarsumbar.com/2026/05/retribusi-surfing-mentawai-resmi.html
The usual independent route is the Mentawai Fast passenger ferry from Muaro Harbour, Padang, to Tuapejat Harbour on north Sipura. The crossing is normally about 3.5–4 hours. Contact PT Mentawai Anugerah Sejahtera directly by its published WhatsApp, phone or email to confirm the sailing and reserve: https://mentawaifast.com/contact-us/. Do not rely on an old online schedule. A slower vehicle/passenger ferry from Teluk Bungus may also serve Tuapejat and takes roughly 12 hours or less, depending on route and conditions.
Book or ask the operator to hold your seat as soon as your Padang hotel and Sipura accommodation are fixed, particularly for June–September. Arrive in Padang at least one night before the ferry; do not plan a same-day flight-to-ferry connection. Reconfirm the sailing the day before departure with Mentawai Fast or through your accommodation. If the fast ferry is unavailable, move to the next sailing, ask your hotel/surf camp to arrange transport, or investigate the slower Teluk Bungus ferry.
Tourism Indonesia lists indicative one-way Mentawai Fast fares from Rp350,000 for foreign adults and Rp280,000 for Indonesian adults, but these are not a guaranteed fare for your date. Confirm the current fare directly with the operator before paying. Surfboards normally travel as separately charged hold baggage, with the charge paid at the counter; request the current board fee and baggage rules from Mentawai Fast before travel. April–October is the main larger-swell period. May–September is the busiest surf window; June–August generally brings the most regular and powerful surf, and July–August are particularly sought after by advanced surfers. April and September are strong all-round choices with somewhat less pressure than the core peak. November–February is usually quieter, wetter and smaller-wave, though it can suit flexible intermediate surfers or travelers prioritizing solitude rather than major swell.
