How to eat here
For the strongest all-round eating, base your meals around Akasaka’s restaurant lanes, Azabu-Juban’s neighborhood-scale dining and Shimbashi’s boisterous after-work alleys. Roppongi is the choice for polished, international and late-night dining, while Aoyama/Omotesando is better for cafés and stylish daytime stops; Odaiba’s largely mall-based food is a weak substitute for central Minato’s street life.
Yakitori and beer in Shimbashi’s compact, smoky post-work alleys · Izakaya-style after-work eating and drinking, especially around Shimbashi, Akasaka and Daimon · Akasaka’s serious restaurant lanes: a broad, high-end-to-business-dining scene rather than one defining local specialty · Azabu-Juban’s small-restaurant, neighborhood-dinner tradition, followed by quieter drinks rather than clubbing · Aoyama and Omotesando café-hopping, particularly on the smaller Minami-Aoyama streets · Roppongi’s upscale, international-facing late dinners—convenient, but often more expensive and less distinctive near the big complexes
- Book sought-after dinners in Akasaka, Azabu-Juban, Roppongi and Aoyama; these are affluent districts where the best small rooms can be harder to access than their polished streets suggest.
- For the most Tokyo-like Minato evening, arrive in Shimbashi around the end of the workday. Its lanes are at their liveliest then, but also crowded and smoky; avoid the most overtly tourist-facing izakaya and choose carefully.
- Daimon and Hamamatsucho are practical for weekday lunch and after-work meals, but their office-district dining scene can thin out on weekends.
- Akasaka is the safest food-first base: central, dense with options and less relentlessly nightlife-driven than Roppongi. Do not assume an English menu signals quality; the district has both excellent restaurants and expensive mediocre ones.
- Azabu-Juban is the better pick for an intimate dinner in a neighborhood setting. Expect crowds on the shopping street at prime dining hours and a notably quiet atmosphere later at night.
- Roppongi’s main nightlife streets have touts and tourist-oriented bars. Do not follow street pitches; choose a place independently, especially late at night, and expect higher bills around Roppongi Hills and Tokyo Midtown regardless of quality level.
