Antananarivo
Base · 1–2 days
The unavoidable gateway is worth a real day, not just an airport sleep: Upper Town views, royal history, markets and highland food give the country context before the parks. Keep it as a buffer around domestic flights rather than gambling on same-day connections.
Andasibe–Mantadia
Base · 2 days
The best rainforest return on travel time from Tana: indri calls at dawn, chameleons, frogs and dependable guided night walks. It is popular and lodge-heavy, but that accessibility is exactly why it belongs on a short first trip.
Southern Highlands (Antsirabe and Ambositra)
Base · 2 days
Cool farming country of rice terraces, markets, pousse-pousse carts and woodcarving, best experienced as a measured pause on RN7. It gives the road south a human texture that park-only itineraries miss.
Ranomafana and Fianarantsoa
Base · 3 days
A wetter, richer rainforest stop than Andasibe, with serious night walks, frogs, birds and slippery forest trails; Fianarantsoa is the sensible staging town. Come if you want deeper natural history, not a quick scenic tick-box.
Isalo and the Ihorombe Plateau
Base · 3 days
Sandstone canyons, open plateau, canyon pools and hard bright light make Isalo the necessary visual break from rainforest Madagascar. Give it two nights so there is time for a proper hike rather than a rushed roadside stop.
Toliara, Ifaty–Mangily and Anakao
Base · 3 days
The dry southwest is the logical exhale after the RN7: thorn forest, pirogues, seafood and reef time rather than another humid forest. Ifaty is easiest; Anakao is quieter but takes more effort.
Morondava, Avenue of the Baobabs and Kirindy
Base · 2 days
Come for baobabs in low light, then stay for Kirindy's dry forest and night wildlife, including the chance of fossa. The avenue alone is not worth a major detour; this works best as part of a west-coast circuit or a short fly-in stay.
Tsingy de Bemaraha
Base · 5 days
Madagascar's most physical landscape: knife-edged limestone, ladders, rope bridges and narrow passages rather than a simple viewpoint. It is spectacular enough to justify the rough approach, but only if the itinerary gives it several days and a spare day.
Nosy Be and the Satellite Islands
Base · 4–5 days
The easiest beach-and-sea finish, with snorkeling, diving and straightforward trips to Nosy Komba, Tanikely and Sakatia. It is more resort-oriented than much of the mainland, so choose a quiet base unless nightlife is the point.
Antsiranana, Amber Mountain and Ankarana
Base · 5 days
The far-north circuit packs a huge bay, cool rainforest, waterfalls, caves and limestone into one tropical-feeling region. Fly in rather than trying to bolt it onto a short overland Tana itinerary.
Sainte-Marie (Nosy Boraha)
A slower, greener island than Nosy Be, suited to cycling, small lodges and quiet beaches rather than resort bustle. It is the clear choice for seasonal whale watching, though crossings and weather can be rough.
Maroantsetra, Masoala and Antongil Bay
This is the committed naturalist option: primary forest, rare birds, marine life and pirogue travel with very little tourism infrastructure. Treat it as a dedicated expedition with an experienced operator, not an add-on to a conventional circuit.
Classic first visit: rainforest and an easy island finish
10 daysAntananarivo (2 days) → Andasibe–Mantadia (2 days) → Antananarivo (1 day) → Nosy Be and the Satellite Islands (5 days)
The sensible first-timer circuit: one substantial road transfer for proper rainforest and indri sightings, then back to Tana before a domestic flight north. The repeated Tana stop is deliberate insurance, not wasted time; do not gamble an international departure on a same-day domestic connection.
Plan this routeRN7 properly paced: highlands, rainforest, sandstone and southwest coast
14 daysAntananarivo (2 days) → Southern Highlands (Antsirabe and Ambositra) (2 days) → Ranomafana and Fianarantsoa (3 days) → Isalo and the Ihorombe Plateau (3 days) → Toliara, Ifaty–Mangily and Anakao (3 days) → Antananarivo (1 day)
This is Madagascar's best overland contrast: rice-country highlands, wet forest, then the hard light and canyons of Isalo before a dry southwest coast finish. It is a driving trip, not a string of quick park visits; the extra nights absorb long RN7 transfers and preserve a real hiking day in Isalo. Fly back from Toliara rather than retracing the whole road.
Plan this routeWest-country expedition: baobabs, Kirindy and the Tsingy
12 daysAntananarivo (2 days) → Morondava, Avenue of the Baobabs and Kirindy (2 days) → Tsingy de Bemaraha (5 days) → Morondava, Avenue of the Baobabs and Kirindy (2 days) → Antananarivo (1 day)
Build the trip around Tsingy rather than treating it as a baobab side trip. Morondava gives you the Avenue in good light and a Kirindy night walk; the five-day Tsingy block covers the rough approach, a full Grand Tsingy day and the inevitable friction of western transport. This is for travelers who will accept bad roads for a landscape that genuinely earns the effort.
Plan this routeFar north by air: rainforest, limestone and sea time
11 daysAntananarivo (1 day) → Antsiranana, Amber Mountain and Ankarana (5 days) → Nosy Be and the Satellite Islands (4 days) → Antananarivo (1 day)
A stronger alternative to the RN7 for active return visitors: fly north for Amber Mountain's cool forest and Ankarana's caves and tsingy, then finish with uncomplicated water time on Nosy Be. It works only if flights line up; keep the final Tana night because northern domestic schedules are not something to stack tightly against an international ticket.
