Vigo is Galicia’s working Atlantic port: fishing boats, shipyards, container quays and the auto industry sit beside a steep old town above the Ría de Vigo. The trap is treating it as either an industrial stopover or merely the ferry pier for the Cíes Islands. Its best character is in the friction between the harbour, the granite lanes of Casco Vello, serious seafood culture and broad views across the ria—not in a long checklist of monumental sights.
The mental map
There are no tourist-useful boroughs to memorise. Think vertically: the port and Avenida de Beiramar at sea level; Casco Vello climbing immediately above it; the commercial centre around Puerta del Sol and Urzáiz farther uphill. West along the coast are Bouzas, Samil and the maritime museum; inland and south are Castrelos and Balaídos, while Monte do Castro is the central hill that makes the geography click.
Pacing
Give the central city one full day: Casco Vello, Puerta del Sol, the co-cathedral, the waterfront and Monte do Castro are a realistic circuit, but the gradients slow everything down. Add a second day for Castrelos, Bouzas/Samil or museums. The Cíes Islands are not an add-on; they consume a full weather-dependent day.
The excavated Iron Age settlement and reconstructed roundhouses explain that Vigo began as a hilltop castro long before it became a port city. It is small but gives the Monte do Castro walk historical substance beyond its views.
This is central Vigo’s essential climb: terraced paths, fortress remnants, gardens, and the city’s most useful overview of the harbor and Ría de Vigo. Walk it with the adjacent archaeological castro, ideally as the transition between the old town and modern center.
The Cíes Islands are Vigo’s defining day trip: protected Atlantic scenery, walking trails, birdlife, and spectacular beaches make them far more memorable than another hour in the city center. Give them a full day, choose a trail as well as a beach, and respect the protected-area rules.
Vigo’s compact old town is the essential ground-level counterweight to its viewpoints: granite lanes, small squares, tapas bars, and the co-cathedral make it the best place to feel the city rather than simply look over it. Wander without a rigid route, then link it to the waterfront and Monte do Castro.
First visit? Stay in Centro / Puerta del Sol.
It is the best compromise in a vertical city: walkable to Casco Vello and the harbour, well supplied with hotels and food, and less awkward with luggage than sleeping deep in the old town. It also keeps both the ferry pier and the rail-station corridor manageable by bus or taxi.
Book before you land
Cíes Islands: reserve the required national-park visit authorization and the Mar de Ons ferry together as soon as dates are firm. Summer weekends and holiday periods can sell out weeks ahead; do not wait until you arrive. · A specific Celta Vigo home match, especially against a major opponent: buy once tickets go on sale if football is central to the trip. Ordinary city museums do not warrant advance booking. · Named theatre or concert performances at Teatro García Barbón or the municipal auditorium: book the event, not the building.
