Grenchen
Base · 1–2 days
Lebern’s only practical town base: two rail stations, the watchmaking story, Museum Grenchen and enough evening services to make a short stay easy. It is a working town, not a postcard old town.
Oberdorf and Weissenstein
Base · 1–2 days
The district’s essential mountain outing: take the cable car from Oberdorf to Weissenstein for the Jura Garden, Planet Trail and broad Alpine-and-Mittelland views. It is accessible enough for casual walkers but also opens the ridge toward Hasenmatt.
Selzach, Altreu and the Witi floodplain
Short stop · 1 day
This is the flat Aare-side counterpoint to the ridge: white storks in Altreu, wet meadows and easy cycling or walking around Witi. Come for a low-key half or full day, not dense sightseeing.
Lommiswil Quarry Dinosaur Tracks
Base · 1–2 days
A short uphill walk leads to real dinosaur footprints viewed from a secure platform, with useful interpretation. It is one of the few stops that genuinely lands with children, but keep expectations to an hour rather than a full afternoon.
Grenchenberg
Short stop · 1 day
The pastoral mountain country above Grenchen, including Untergrenchenberg, Stierenberg and paths toward Wandfluh. Choose it for quieter ridge walking and farm-linked mountain inns; a car makes it substantially easier.
Rüttenen and Verena Gorge
Short stop · 0.5 days
A compact wooded escape with streamside paths, chapels, grottoes and the hermitage landscape. The gorge walk is short and atmospheric, though it feels more like a polished local outing than remote nature.
Bettlach and the Western Jura Foot
Short stop · 0.5 days
A useful, quieter foothill access area between Grenchen and Selzach, with less-developed trailheads and good connections into the Jura side. Use it for walks or as part of a bike ride rather than expecting a sightseeing center.
Langendorf–Bellach–Günsberg Foothills
Ordinary village-and-farm scenery where the plain meets the mountain, best experienced on two wheels. It works as connective landscape on a leisurely ride, not as a standalone destination.
Classic long weekend from Grenchen
3 nights / 4 daysGrenchen (Arrival evening plus 1 morning) → Oberdorf and Weissenstein (1 full day) → Selzach, Altreu and the Witi floodplain (1 full day) → Lommiswil Quarry Dinosaur Tracks (1-2 hours before departure)
The sensible first visit: stay in Grenchen throughout, devote one proper day to the ridge and one to the storks and floodplain, then use the dinosaur tracks as a deliberately light final stop.

4 nights / 5 daysGrenchen (1-1.5 days) → Oberdorf and Weissenstein (1 full day) → Lommiswil Quarry Dinosaur Tracks (1-2 hours) → Bettlach and the Western Jura Foot (Half day by bike or on foot) → Selzach, Altreu and the Witi floodplain (Half to 1 day) → Rüttenen and Verena Gorge (Half day before departure)
For travelers who want more movement than museums: pair a substantial Weissenstein ridge walk with a flat cycling day through Bettlach, Selzach and Altreu. Grenchen remains the practical rail-friendly base.
Plan this routeHiker’s deep cut: Grenchenberg and a Weissenstein overnight
5 nights / 6 daysGrenchen (2 nights and 1 recovery afternoon) → Grenchenberg (1 full day) → Oberdorf and Weissenstein (2 days / 1 overnight on the ridge) → Selzach, Altreu and the Witi floodplain (1 full day)
The one itinerary where changing hotels is worthwhile. Use Grenchenberg for quieter foothill walking, then sleep on Weissenstein after a ridge day rather than rushing down on the last cable car; finish with easy cycling and storks in Witi.
