- Pace
- For a first trip, use one valley-town base—Sion, Martigny or Brig—plus one mountain base such as Zermatt, Verbier, Saas-Fee or Bettmeralp/Riederalp. Four nights is enough for a Sion-or-Martigny plus Zermatt sampler; seven to ten nights can cover western/central Valais, Zermatt and either Aletsch or Verbier. Do not try to day-trip Verbier, Zermatt, Saas-Fee and Aletsch from one hotel: transfers and lift connections will consume the trip.
- When to go
- June through September is the best all-purpose window for hiking, open lifts and long days, though July and August are crowded and hot in the Rhône valley. Mid-September to mid-October is arguably the best adult-travel window for harvest atmosphere, clearer air and cooler walking, but lift closures begin soon after. December through March is for skiing and winter scenery; April–May and November are useful for wine towns, museums and spas, not a reliable high-Alps itinerary.

Valais is a long, sun-baked Rhône valley with serious Alpine terrain bolted onto both sides: vineyards, working towns and Roman-era crossroads below; car-free resorts, glaciers and four-thousand-metre peaks above. It delivers Switzerland’s blockbuster mountain scenery—Matterhorn, Aletsch Glacier, Zermatt—but is just as rewarding for its thermal baths, irrigation-channel walks, raclette-and-wine culture and quieter side valleys. This is not a compact resort district: weather, lift timetables and the slow climb from valley rail stations into side valleys determine whether a day works.
The mental map
Treat Valais as a fast east-west rail corridor with slow, steep side valleys. Lower/western Valais is French-speaking and runs roughly from Martigny through Verbier and Sion; central Valais covers Sion, Sierre, Crans-Montana, Anniviers and Hérens; Upper Valais east of Visp and Brig becomes increasingly German-speaking and includes Aletsch, Saas-Fee, Zermatt and Goms. Martigny–Sion–Sierre–Visp–Brig is efficient by train, but the places people come for usually require another 30–90 minutes by cable car, bus or mountain railway.

Where to go
1Zermatt
Base · 2–3 nights
The Matterhorn base is expensive and busy, but nowhere else in the canton matches its concentration of high-altitude scenery, lifts and serious trails. Stay at least two nights so weather does not decide whether you see anything.

Sion
2Sion
Base · 2–3 nights
The best all-round valley base: an actual old town, Valère and Tourbillon castles, good restaurants and easy access to the central vineyards. It gives a Valais trip some texture beyond resort villages and cable cars.

3Verbier and Val de Bagnes
Base · 2–3 nights
A high-energy mountain base for big 4 Vallées skiing, Mont Fort and strong summer hiking, with quieter and cheaper alternatives in Le Châble or deeper in the Bagnes valley. Come for mountain time, not for a quick overnight.

Aletsch Arena
4Aletsch Arena

Riederalp, Bettmeralp and Fiescheralp sit on car-free terraces above the Great Aletsch Glacier. It is the calmer choice for glacier viewpoints and panoramic walks, especially for travelers who do not need Zermatt's spectacle.

Martigny
5Martigny
Base · 2 nights
A practical western base rather than a dream resort town, but excellent for Fondation Pierre Gianadda, Roman remains, Fully wine country and access to Verbier or the Great St Bernard valleys. Use it to make the western end of Valais efficient.

Val d'Anniviers

Grimentz, Zinal, Saint-Luc and Chandolin offer dark timber villages, Lac de Moiry and more character than glamour. It rewards travelers willing to trade fast connections for proper high-valley atmosphere.

Saas-Fee
7Saas-Fee
A car-free, high-altitude glacier resort with dependable snow and a more compact, family-oriented feel than Zermatt. Its dead-end valley location makes it worth staying in rather than treating as a stopover.

Val d'Hérens
8Val d'Hérens
Evolène, Les Haudères and Arolla make a quieter, more traditional mountain world south of Sion, with Hérens cattle culture, the Grand Dixence Dam and rugged glacier country. It is a strong antidote to polished resort Valais.

The useful eastern rail hub for Aletsch, Simplon and Goms, with Stockalper Palace giving it more substance than a pure transfer stop. It is a sensible one-night break between central Valais and the upper valleys.

Don't miss
1
Château de Tourbillon
The ruined hilltop castle is one of Sion’s defining silhouettes and earns the uphill walk with a broad view over the Rhône valley. Visit it as the more rugged counterpoint to Valère, ideally when the light is low rather than in midday heat.
2
Basilique de Valère
Valère is the essential historic sight in Sion: a fortified church complex with the celebrated medieval organ and a compact museum setting. It works best as a slow, combined visit with Tourbillon rather than a quick church stop.
3
Bisse du Torrent Neuf
This restored historic irrigation channel above Savièse is one of Valais’s most dramatic bisse walks, with cliffside passages and suspension bridges. Use it for a half-day walk, not simply a bridge photo; sturdy shoes make the experience much better.
4
Zinal Glacier
The glacier at the head of the Val d’Anniviers delivers the high-alpine scale many visitors come to Valais for, framed by imposing peaks. Treat it as a proper hike from Zinal and check trail and glacier-safety conditions rather than expecting close glacier access without effort.
5
Matterhorn
The Matterhorn is the visual symbol of Valais and Switzerland’s most recognizable alpine peak, even though the best experience is usually from Zermatt’s trails and viewpoints rather than a close-up visit. Give it at least one clear-weather morning and keep a second day flexible because cloud can erase it completely.
6
Gornergrat
The Gornergrat railway is the most efficient big-view experience in the Zermatt area, placing the Matterhorn opposite a vast sweep of glaciers and four-thousand-metre peaks. It is expensive but justified for a first visit when the forecast is clear; walk down partway if conditions and fitness allow.
