Baltimore
Base · 3 nights
Maryland’s essential urban stop for strong museums, baseball, old port neighborhoods and food beyond the crab-cake cliché. Stay in Fells Point, Harbor East, Mount Vernon or near Penn Station; do not mistake the Inner Harbor mall zone for the whole city.
Annapolis
Short stop · 1 day
A compact, walkable Bay town of brick streets, Naval Academy views, docks and sailing culture. It is an easy Baltimore day trip, though worth an overnight if you want a cruise, seafood dinner and an unhurried waterfront evening.
Frederick, Catoctin and Antietam country
Base · 2 nights
The best inland counterweight to the Bay: Frederick’s lively historic core, Antietam’s battlefield, Catoctin hikes and the C&O Canal corridor. Use Frederick as the base; once outside town, a car is non-negotiable.
St. Michaels, Easton and Oxford
Base · 1–2 nights
The polished, classic Chesapeake triangle for harbor walks, maritime history, good restaurants and slow waterfront time. Base in St. Michaels for atmosphere or Easton for more dining and practical services; Oxford is the quiet detour, not the main event.
Cambridge, Blackwater and the Harriet Tubman landscape
Short stop · 1 night
A marshier, more historically substantial Eastern Shore base than St. Michaels, built around the Tubman story, Blackwater wildlife and working-waterfront context. Come for dawn birding, paddling and history rather than nightlife.
Berlin, Ocean City and Assateague Island
Base · 1–2 nights
Maryland’s Atlantic-coast trio works precisely because each piece does something different: Berlin has character, Ocean City supplies beach-and-boardwalk excess, and Assateague delivers dunes, marsh and wild horses. Sleep in Berlin if you want charm; choose Ocean City only if you actively want resort energy.
Southern Maryland
Base · 2 nights
A deliberately low-key Chesapeake peninsula for Historic St. Mary’s City, Leonardtown, Solomons and Calvert Cliffs. It rewards travelers with a car and time to follow tidal roads, eat seafood and skip the more polished Bay itinerary.
Cumberland and the C&O Canal country
Base · 2 nights
A western Maryland base with canal and railroad history, access to the C&O towpath and Great Allegheny Passage, and a properly industrial-Appalachian feel. Go if you are cycling, riding Amtrak, hiking or continuing toward the mountains—not for a generic city break.
Deep Creek Lake and Garrett County
Base · 2 nights
Maryland’s genuine mountain escape: lake cabins, Swallow Falls, paddling, fall color and winter snow sports. Give it at least two nights; it is too far west to bolt onto a short Baltimore-and-Annapolis trip.
Baltimore with an Annapolis day trip
4 days / 3 nightsBaltimore (3 nights; use one full day for Annapolis)
The right short first visit, especially without a car. Base in Baltimore for museums, neighborhoods and food, then make Annapolis a deliberate day trip rather than wasting time changing hotels. Do not dilute this with the coast or mountains.
Plan this routeCity, Chesapeake and Atlantic coast
8 days / 7 nightsBaltimore (3 nights; use one full day for Annapolis) → Annapolis (Day trip from Baltimore) → St. Michaels, Easton and Oxford (1 night) → Cambridge, Blackwater and the Harriet Tubman landscape (1 night) → Berlin, Ocean City and Assateague Island (2 nights)
A strong first road trip once you have a rental car: Baltimore supplies the city break, the Eastern Shore shifts from polished harbor towns to marsh and Tubman history, and the coast finishes with Assateague plus as much Ocean City as you can tolerate. Do not try to compress the Shore transfers into one day.
Plan this routeClassic Maryland: city, Civil War country and coast
10 days / 9 nightsBaltimore (3 nights; use one full day for Annapolis) → Annapolis (Day trip from Baltimore) → Frederick, Catoctin and Antietam country (2 nights) → St. Michaels, Easton and Oxford (2 nights) → Berlin, Ocean City and Assateague Island (2 nights)
For travelers who want more than Chesapeake postcard towns. Frederick gives the trip real historical and hiking weight before the route turns east for maritime Maryland and the Atlantic. Skip Deep Creek here; adding it turns a well-paced trip into a chain of transfer days.
Plan this routeMaryland west to east, including the mountains
15 days / 14 nightsBaltimore (3 nights; use one full day for Annapolis) → Annapolis (Day trip from Baltimore) → Frederick, Catoctin and Antietam country (2 nights) → Cumberland and the C&O Canal country (2 nights) → Deep Creek Lake and Garrett County (2 nights) → Southern Maryland (2 nights) → St. Michaels, Easton and Oxford (2 nights) → Berlin, Ocean City and Assateague Island (1 night)
The full-state route for a car-based trip, moving logically from Baltimore through the western rail-and-mountain country, then back to the Bay and Atlantic coast. The Deep Creek-to-Southern Maryland leg is a transfer day; treat it that way rather than pretending both ends deserve a full sightseeing schedule.
