Zion National Park is a 149,000-acre protected canyon landscape in southwestern Utah, where the Virgin River has carved sheer Navajo-sandstone walls, slot canyons, mesas, hanging gardens, and high plateaus. First protected in 1909 as Mukuntuweap National Monument and redesignated as a national park in 1919, it preserves exceptional erosion-shaped geology, river and wilderness systems, and human-history resources; its defining experience is traveling through the floor of Zion Canyon beneath walls rising thousands of feet.
Zion is worth the logistical effort because visitors can experience the canyon from inside it: ride the shuttle beneath towering walls, walk the easy Riverside Walk, wade into The Narrows, or—permit in hand—climb the exposed route to Angels Landing. It is especially rewarding for hikers, photographers, active families, and southern-Utah road-trippers. Skip or downgrade it if you need spontaneous parking and driving, dislike queues or heat, or have too little flexibility for shuttle schedules, weather closures, and crowds.
16h visitBook aheadLate September through early November, ideally Tuesday through Thursday, offers the best overall mix of manageable hiking temperatures and lighter crowds; late April through May is also pleasant but snowmelt can make The Narrows cold, high, or closed. Arrive around the first canyon shuttle, generally about 7 a.m. in the main season. Avoid summer weekends and holidays if possible: heat, parking shortages, long entry waits, crowded shuttles, and July–September flash-flood risk are at their worst.
Booking the visit
There is no timed-entry or shuttle reservation: pay the normal entrance fee ($35 per private vehicle for seven days) or use a federal pass, but do not expect a pre-purchased pass to reserve parking or bypass traffic. For Angels Landing, apply in the seasonal lottery as soon as its application window opens; if unsuccessful, enter the day-before lottery between 12:01 a.m. and 3 p.m. Mountain Time the day before your hike, and save the permit confirmation offline. During shuttle season, park legally in Springdale, take the town shuttle to Zion Canyon Village, then walk across the pedestrian bridge to the visitor center and park shuttle; do not spend the morning circling the South Entrance lot. Reserve Zion Lodge or campsites as soon as booking inventory opens if staying inside the park matters.
Stay in Springdale and reach the pedestrian bridge/visitor center at first-shuttle time. Ride directly to the furthest stop first—Temple of Sinawava for Riverside Walk and The Narrows, or the Grotto for Angels Landing and Scout Lookout—then work back down-canyon later. If arriving late morning, accept Springdale parking and the town shuttle rather than hunting for a park space.
- The main Zion Canyon road is shuttle-only for most of the year; the free park shuttle needs no reservation. Keep track of the final shuttle—missing it can mean a walk of up to nine miles back.
- Angels Landing requires a permit beyond Scout Lookout at all times. Scout Lookout itself does not require the permit; choose it instead if exposure, heights, wind, lightning, or fatigue make the chained final section unsuitable.
- The bottom-up Narrows from Temple of Sinawava needs no permit, but the river is the trail. Check same-day river flow, forecast, and flash-flood status; do not enter during a flash-flood warning, and expect closures above 150 cfs. Wear sturdy closed-toe shoes, use a walking stick, and waterproof phone and gear.
- For a low-stress sunset option, use the paved Pa’rus Trail for Watchman and canyon views. Canyon Overlook is the best short viewpoint hike, but its trailhead parking is extremely limited; try sunrise or late afternoon and do not depend on finding a space.
- Pets are allowed only on the Pa’rus Trail and are not allowed on park shuttles; trained service animals are the exception. Carry ample water, sun protection, layers, and food, and do not drink untreated Virgin River water.
