Seattle and central Puget Sound
Base · 1–3 days
The best short-trip base in Washington: strong food, museums, neighborhoods and ferries without needing a car. Use it for Seattle proper, Bainbridge Island and, if useful, Tacoma—not as a substitute for the national parks.
Olympic Peninsula
Base · 3 days
Washington's most complete nature circuit: Hurricane Ridge, Lake Crescent, Sol Duc, Hoh rainforest and Pacific beaches all belong in the same trip. Split nights between Port Angeles and Forks, Kalaloch or Quinault; commuting from one base ruins the point.
San Juan Islands
Base · 3 days
A ferry trip built around coves, kayaking, wildlife and slow harbor-town days. Choose one main island—San Juan for easy first-time logistics, Orcas for scenery and hikes, Lopez for cycling and quiet—and stay at least two nights.
Skagit Valley, La Conner, Anacortes and Bellingham
Short stop · 1 day
The practical northwestern corridor for tulip fields, farm stands, waterfront towns and San Juan ferry departures. Anacortes is the useful ferry base; Bellingham is the better overnight for restaurants and a livelier small-city feel.
North Cascades and Methow Valley
Base · 2 days
The state's strongest alpine drive, with Diablo Lake, huge mountain relief and a dry-side finish around Winthrop and Mazama. Base on the east side rather than expecting services inside North Cascades National Park, and only plan the SR 20 crossing when it is open.
Leavenworth, Wenatchee and Lake Chelan
Base · 1–2 days
An easy east-slope stop for mountain activities, rivers, orchards and hot-weather lake time. Leavenworth is knowingly kitschy, so use it as an outdoor base rather than making its themed downtown the whole itinerary.
Mount Rainier
Base · 2 days
The essential volcanic mountain visit for Paradise meadows, Skyline Trail, Sunrise views and old-growth forest. Ashford is the sensible base for Paradise; treat Seattle as too far away for a relaxed day trip.
Yakima Valley and Tri-Cities
Base · 2 days
The dry agricultural side of Washington: hops, orchards, wine and Columbia River landscapes rather than evergreen scenery. Yakima is better for beer and farm-country context; Tri-Cities works better as a river-and-winery base.
Walla Walla
Base · 2 days
Washington's most satisfying wine-town base, with a proper historic center, serious restaurants and vineyards close enough to make tasting days workable. It deserves a dedicated long weekend or an eastern-Washington pairing, not a rushed add-on from Seattle.
Spokane and the Palouse
Short stop · 1 day
A practical eastern-Washington city base paired with broad wheat-country drives toward Pullman and Palouse Falls. Come for the light, open roads and photography, not a packed checklist of attractions.
First Washington trip: Seattle, Olympic and Mount Rainier
9 daysSeattle and central Puget Sound (3 days) → Olympic Peninsula (3 days) → Mount Rainier (2 days) → Seattle and central Puget Sound (1 day)
The strongest first-timer circuit for a real mix of city, rainforest, wild coast and high mountain. Keep Olympic to three nights split between the Port Angeles side and the Forks/Kalaloch side; the final Seattle night is a sensible flight buffer.

The better choice for ferries, island time and Washington's best alpine drive. Pick one San Juan island rather than trying to collect all three, and only run this route once the SR 20 North Cascades crossing is confirmed open.

For repeat visitors who would rather chase harvest-season wine, hops, orchard country and wide-open farm roads than queue for national-park parking. It works best in early autumn; Walla Walla gets enough time to be more than a tasting-room sprint.
