Kathmandu Valley
Base · 2–3 days
Nepal’s cultural core: Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur pack in stupas, temple rituals, Newar neighborhoods and the country’s best urban food. Give it three full days; treating it as an airport layover is a mistake.
Pokhara
Base · 1–3 days
The lakefront reset after Kathmandu, with Phewa Lake, short hikes and Annapurna views when the weather cooperates. It is also the practical base for Annapurna trekking, though Lakeside itself is unapologetically tourist-built.
Chitwan National Park and Sauraha
Base · 2 days
A proper Terai counterpoint to the Himalaya: rhino, gharial, birdlife and riverine jungle, usually based from Sauraha. Stay two nights minimum and choose a naturalist-led lodge; elephant-back rides are not the move.
Everest / Khumbu
Base · 12–14 days
The Sherpa homeland and Nepal’s iconic high-mountain trek, from Lukla through Namche, Tengboche and on toward Everest Base Camp or Gokyo. It needs roughly 12–16 days door-to-door and weather buffers around flights—not a quick add-on to a highlights trip.
Annapurna
Base · 6–8 days
Nepal’s most flexible big-mountain region, reached via Pokhara: choose the short Poon Hill walk, Annapurna Base Camp, or a longer Circuit variation. Specify the exact route before booking; 'Annapurna trek' can mean radically different walking days, altitudes and road exposure.
Lumbini
The Buddhist pilgrimage landscape around the Maya Devi Temple and monastic zone, close to the Indian border. It is reflective rather than lively, flat and hot, and worth a night unless Buddhist history is a central reason for the trip.
Langtang and Helambu
The closest substantial trekking country to Kathmandu: Tamang and Tibetan-Buddhist communities, forest, alpine valleys and high lakes. It avoids Lukla-flight dependence, but the road approach can be slow and landslide-prone.
Mustang
Dry, wind-cut trans-Himalayan terrain north of Pokhara, with Muktinath in Lower Mustang and Tibetan-Buddhist culture in restricted Upper Mustang. It is Nepal at its most visually unlike the Kathmandu–Pokhara circuit, but permits, altitude and transport make it a deliberate trip.
Janakpur
A strongly Maithili and Ramayana-centered city built around Janaki Mandir, Mithila art and devotional life. It shows a more Indian-influenced Nepal than the hill-and-mountain circuit, but is best treated as a specialized cultural stop.
Bardiya National Park
Wilder, quieter western Terai jungle than Chitwan, with jungle walks, river trips and serious birding or tiger-country atmosphere. It is not efficient on a short trip: from Kathmandu, expect a Nepalgunj flight followed by about three hours on the road.
Ilam and the Eastern Hills
Tea gardens, misty slopes and slower eastern Nepal, far removed from the Everest-and-Pokhara checklist. It works best as an eastern overland extension from Darjeeling, Sikkim or Kakarbhitta—not as a rushed add-on from Kathmandu.
Classic first visit
9 daysKathmandu Valley (3 days) → Pokhara (3 days) → Kathmandu Valley (2 days)
The right first Nepal trip for most people: three proper days for the Valley’s temples, Newar food and old cities, then Pokhara for lakefront breathing room and mountain views. The Kathmandu–Pokhara transfer is a real travel day, not a scenic little hop; finish back in the Valley rather than gambling your international flight on road or weather delays.
Plan this routeCulture, jungle and mountains
12 daysKathmandu Valley (3 days) → Chitwan National Park and Sauraha (2 days) → Pokhara (3 days) → Kathmandu Valley (3 days)
For first-timers who genuinely want wildlife as well as cities and mountains. Chitwan earns its place with two nights—one arrival afternoon, one full jungle day—not a token overnight. Expect two substantial overland transfer days between Kathmandu, Chitwan and Pokhara; if rhino and riverine jungle do not matter to you, take the simpler classic route instead.
Plan this routeAnnapurna starter trek
13-15 daysKathmandu Valley (2 days) → Pokhara (2 days) → Annapurna (6-8 days) → Pokhara (1 day) → Kathmandu Valley (2 days)
A first serious Himalayan trip without Everest’s Lukla-flight dependency. Use the Annapurna block for a 4-5-day Poon Hill trek plus approach days, or extend it for Annapurna Base Camp; do not accept a vague 'Annapurna trek' itinerary. Pokhara is the necessary staging point, and the final Kathmandu nights are deliberate insurance against trail-transport delays and fatigue.
Plan this routeEverest properly
17-20 daysKathmandu Valley (2-3 days) → Everest / Khumbu (12-14 days) → Kathmandu Valley (2-3 days)
For fit trekkers making Nepal primarily an Everest trip: Lukla, Namche, Tengboche and Everest Base Camp/Kala Patthar or a Gokyo variation. The Khumbu allocation includes acclimatization and contingency, because weather can shut down Lukla flights. Do not dilute this with Pokhara or Chitwan unless you have at least three weeks; the end buffer in Kathmandu is non-negotiable.
